The Jaguars have said they're playing their starters in this game, and while I like taking them on the full-game spread based on the fact that Tennessee just isn't very good, I absolutely love the Jaguars on the first-half line, since we're still getting them as 'dogs in that situation. Even if the Jaguars starters rest in the second half, this team should enter halftime at worst tied with the inferior Titans.
The Jaguars are coming off an ugly loss to the 49ers. They also have the unique opportunity to put their division rivals out of the playoffs with a win. When you’re a young team like the Jags, every game counts and it builds momentum heading into their playoff appearance.
The Titans aren't as good as their record suggests, nor are they as bad as many analysts would have you believe. But I don't think they're going to win this game against a Jaguars team that doesn't plan to rest its players. The Titans dealt the Jaguars their worst loss of the season in a 37-16 pasting in Jacksonville back in Week 2, and Jaguars players will certainly be looking to take their revenge by knocking the Titans out of the playoffs. If we need a backdoor cover from Blake Bortles, he can get it against a mediocre Tennessee secondary. If the situation is flipped, I can't see Marcus Mariota leading his team back against this elite defense.
This line opened as high as six in some quarters when Jacksonville became locked in as the third seed on the AFC playoff bracket. Then Jaguars coach Doug Marrone — with his boss Tom Coughlin no doubt whispering in his ear — pledged to go all-out against Tennessee. The spread plunged 2.5 points. Those of us who are fond of the Titans in this spot might delay committing to see if the number dips another half-point. Even with the hook, I like them despite periodic bouts of head-scratching performances. The Titans thrive at home in ATS terms, having failed to cover in just two of the past dozen dates. Let's not forget that Tennessee dealt the Jags their worst loss this season — by far — 37-16 in Week 2.
