Four experts on San Diego, and I get it with Cy Young favorite Joe Musgrove (8-0, 1.59) on the mound. He's also just off the COVID list so maybe he's not quite 100 percent. Not a big Ranger Suarez fan for the Phils, but they clearly have the better lineup as the Padres remain without Manny Machado and are resting Luke Voit and Jake Cronenworth. Really, this is me Heisman stiff-arming the SportsLine Curse the other four are facing with a runline play that is the same price as Padres ML. Ideally, the Friars win by a run and we all cash. The Phils tend to play to their level of competition ...
Time to fire another manager in Philadelphia. The Phillies are 15-5 in June but have lost their last three games. They’re bored. They need a fire lit under them again to respond with hard work, as they look lazy again. They appeared to be uninspired while getting swept at Texas. Now they face Cy Young Award candidate Joe Musgrove. The Padres have won 11 of 12 starts behind the right-hander, who has posted a 1.59 ERA. Take San Diego to win.
This Phillies team, as built, is going to be incredibly inconsistent through the season. We'll see lots of peaks and valleys. We already have. They had won 15 of 17 through Saturday, but they've now lost three in a row against bad teams and they're liable to fall into a funk again. They've already played seven straight road games and now travel to San Diego. Starter Ranger Suarez has a 5.05 ERA in his last seven starts, the Padres hit lefties well and that bullpen isn't the least bit reliable. The Padres start MLB ERA leader Joe Musgrove. He hasn't pitched fewer than six innings all season and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a game.
So the Padres have actually been worse against lefties lately because of the changes in their lineup but they hit Madison Bumgarner pretty well yesterday. They face Ranger Suarez today and he has been very hit or miss for the Phillies. However, he has seven walks in his past two games, and he struggled in both. The Phillies looked terrible in Texas and I think they should continue to struggle in San Diego. Joe Musgrove has been the most dominant pitcher in the league this season. He has pitched a quality start in every one of his 12 starts. I like the Padres here even without Manny Machado.
The Padres are 11-1 when Joe Musgrove starts, and batters are hitting .196 against him. Even without Manny Machado, I like San Diego to do damage versus Ranger Suarez (4.43 ERA, 1.51 WHIP). The Padres also boast the better bullpen. The Phillies are slumping, having lost three straight while scoring a total of five runs. Back San Diego to win for the eighth time in its last 10 home games.
