This line is way too low. Orioles starter Tyler Wells has a 4.41 ERA and has struggled on the road. The Yankees will be using JP Sears as their "starter," but this is likely a bullpen game for them. If the first two games are any indicator, the offenses will thrive again and this game will go over the low total.
Tonight will be the 13th time the Orioles face the Yankees. There is familiarity there and the Orioles have more than held their own. Aaron Boone has a short bench and depleted lineup with Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu joining those on the sidelines. He also has a compromised bullpen after last night and what amounts to an opener starting in JP Sears. With a day off on Thursday and his squad of relievers largely available, Brandon Hyde can manage this like a playoff game and he's been getting more length out of converted starter Tyler Wells than most could have expected. Baltimore is 6-4-1 in their last 11 series despite playing a brutal schedule and I like the O's in this spot.
The Orioles have won one game in this series and lost in extra innings, yet they were still +230 and +190 underdogs in the first two games. The oddsmakers are smartening up a bit, but this line is still way too high. DJ Lemahieu was scratched from the lineup yesterday and Giancarlo Stanton left early with an injury. They both could be back in today, but I would be very surprised if they are. Aroldis Chapman is also on the IL and the Yankees top two relievers in Clay Holmes and Michael King threw plenty of pitches last night. The Orioles will probably sit a player as well and they do tend to struggle against lefties, but we saw how they were able to keep it close against the lefty yesterday. JP Sears will be making just his second career appearance and probably won’t go too deep. Tyler Wells has allowed just 2 ER in 9 IP against the Yankees this season.
