The model knows the Yankees are patient at the plate. New York has 33 walks in 10 games, a top-five figure, and the Yankees led the AL in walks in 2021. New York also ranked in the top five of the AL in home runs and on-base percentage a year ago, and the Yankees project to have a pitching advantage. Four-time All-Star Gerrit Cole has a 2.89 ERA since the start of the 2018 season, and he has struck out 12.6 batters per nine inning across almost 700 innings during that sample.
The model also knows the Tigers have a strong bullpen this season. Detroit's relievers have a 2.97 ERA with only 2.52 walks per nine innings in 2022. The Tigers also allow only 0.69 home runs per nine innings with the bullpen. Starting pitcher Tyler Alexander enjoyed success in 2021, navigating more than 100 innings with a 3.81 ERA. Left-handers particularly struggle against Alexander with an ugly .586 OPS against him in his career.
