Jonathan Coachman is joined by sports betting experts Allie O'Neill, Zack Cimini and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball, soccer and the NFL for Monday, Aug. 22.
Coach starts things off with the SportsLine Play of the Day, which is courtesy of Martin Green: In the English Premier League, Liverpool (-1 at +170) to cover against Manchester United (3 p.m. ET). "Man United, yeah, they have Cristiano Ronaldo, but they are terrible. They got blown out in their first game," Coach says. "They laid out Man United last year 5-0. They've got an incredible front line. They're going to score goal after goal after goal after goal."
O'Neill is up next with a play in MLB. She likes the Dodgers (-1.5 at -115) to cover against the Brewers in the opener of their three-game series (10:10 p.m. ET). "They're behind Julio Urias, who has a 2.40 ERA," Allie says. "The Dodgers have won 11 straight of his starts and covered the run line in all of those. The Brewers are way worse versus left-handed pitching. In Milwaukee last week, he went five shutout innings. … The Dodgers are definitely way better when facing left-handed pitching than the Brewers. (Milwaukee LHP Eric Lauer) has a 4.48 ERA on the road in contrast to his 2.64 at home."
Coach jumps back in with a pair of MLB plays. The first is Over 8.5 runs (-110) in the Reds-Phillies game (7:05 p.m. ET). "There is definitely a boost in Philly, but I just like the fact that these two teams are hitting well, they love to score runs and their pitching kind of (stinks)," he says. "(Philadelphia's) Noah Syndergaard, he has not been the same guy since he left New York. I don't have any trust in him."
His second play is Over 8.5 runs (-120) in the Braves-Pirates contest (7:05 p.m. ET). "Jake Odorizzi, since he came over to Atlanta, he hasn't gone over five innings," Coach says. "So you're going to bring in the bullpen. The Pirates are better than people think."
Cimini follows with an NFL preseason play: The Falcons (-2.5) to cover against the Jets (8 p.m. ET). "The Jets likely are going to sit their starters. This means a dress rehearsal that we're going to see is pretty much going to be one-sided," Zack says. "I think that dress-rehearsal aspect is going to be beneficial for the Atlanta Falcons. Desmond Ridder is going to play against the third-string defense of the New York Jets. We saw in their first game against the Detroit Lions, he led them to a comeback victory. You have to believe his confidence is up, especially if you're going to see a third-string unit."
Hartstein wraps things up with an MLB play. He likes Over 1.5 runs in the first five innings for the Pirates (-115) in their game against the Braves. "Jake Odorizzi, three starts since coming over to Atlanta, the guy is not comfortable yet - 5.93 ERA, the WHIP is over two," Larry says. "Ben Gamel, the cleanup hitter for the Pirates, 4-for-6 with a double and two walks lifetime against Odorizzi, so that could help. Maybe one big hit from him gets us Over that total. The Pirates are a bad offense, fourth-worst in all of baseball, but at home, not quite as bad - 3.95 runs per game at home and about 3.3 on the road."
