One easy story line: The NFL's No. 32 rush defense of the visitors against the No. 32 rush offense of the hosts.
Sometimes life isn't fair, and we might see the Packers finish with a better overall record than the Panthers yet finish last in the incredibly tough NFC North and miss the postseason. Meanwhile, Carolina could win eight games and still capture the mega-weak NFC South that doesn't have a team with even a winning record. Certainly, a head-to-head tiebreaker here can't hurt for playoff purposes.
Carolina is currently a +144 favorite in the South, although I'd probably take Atlanta (+170). Despite being a division favorite, the Panthers are +148 underdogs for the playoffs, as that's the sportsbooks saying they give them little shot at a wild-card spot. To miss out, they are -180. How much do things change with one result? Via the SportsLine Projection Model, Carolina's playoff swing could change as much as 17% and Green Bay's as much as 24%.
The Panthers are currently given a 26.5% shot at extra football that rises to 39.8% with an upset victory and drops to 21.1% with a loss. The Packers probably aren't catching the Vikings in the North and are +1125 division longshots but +126 for the postseason with No at -154. They'd better win here, that's all I can say, with a trip to New England up next. The Pack have a 56.5% chance at the playoffs that improves to 63.3% with a victory and plummets to 39.7% with a loss.
