Jadeveon Clowney or Logan Ryan? New York Jets now have salary-cap space to sign one

The New York Jets now have enough salary cap space to boost their defense with either Jadeveon Clowney or Logan Ryan.

On Tuesday, the New York Jets realized an additional $11 million in NFL salary-cap space thanks to the release of cornerback Trumaine Johnson. That transaction actually happened in early March, but the Jets designated Johnson – who got a five-year deal in 2018 but was a bust – as a post-June 1 release so that's why New York got that salary-cap bump Tuesday.

According to overthecap.com, Gang Green now has about $24.7 million in cap space, which is the fifth-most in the NFL. Don't be surprised if New York uses a large chunk of that to add either former Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney or ex-Titans defensive back Logan Ryan.

It looked like the Jets were about to sign Ryan in mid-May, with Ryan even saying "it makes a lot of sense" to sign there, but for whatever reason it didn't get finalized. Ryan is from New Jersey so playing for the Jets would be a homecoming.

Ryan was terrific last year for Tennessee, joining Adrian Wilson (Cardinals, 2006) and Thomas Davis (Panthers, 2015) as the only players since 2000 to record at least four sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles in a season. Ryan also set career highs of with 18 pass breakups and 113 tackles.

The last pass in the New England Patriots career by Tom Brady was intercepted in the final seconds of the Titans' Wild-Card playoff upset and returned by Ryan for a touchdown.

Clowney could cost quite a bit more than Ryan even though the former No. 1 overall pick has had some injury concerns in his career and only had three sacks in 2019. The Cleveland Browns continue to have the most cap space in the NFL at more than $37 million but reportedly had an offer to Clowney rejected.

Three other teams gained cap space Tuesday thanks to these players designated as post-June 1 cuts: Trey Burton (Bears; $2.8 million), Desmond Trufant (Falcons; $10.75 million) and Todd Gurley (Rams; $5.5 million). None of the three still have the space, though, to sign Clowney. We wrote Monday that the Rams could now have enough for Cam Newton but are long shots to sign him.
