2025 Peter Pan Stakes picks, odds: Horse racing writer has best bets for Belmont Stakes prep race

One week after hitting the Kentucky Derby for $1,045, SportsLine horse racing writer Gene Menez has identified his picks for Saturday's finale at Aqueduct

Ten 3-year-old horses will try to build momentum going into the Belmont Stakes when the starting gate opens in the 2025 Peter Pan Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City. The race serves as a prep race for the final leg of the Triple Crown, which is set for June 7 at Saratoga Race Course. For Saturday, Withers Stakes winner Captain Cook is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the 2025 Peter Pan Stakes odds. Hill Road (5-2), Vassimo (5-1), Surfside Moon (8-1), McAfee (8-1) and Uncaged (8-1) round out the top six on the odds board for the 2025 Peter Pan Stakes field. Post time is 6:46 p.m. ET.

With talented but inexperienced 3-year-olds set to enter the starting gate on Saturday, you NEED to see what SportsLine horse racing expert Gene Menez has to say before making any 2025 Peter Pan Stakes picks or horse racing predictions.

A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as SI's handicapper for the Triple Crown races and correctly predicted Super Saver to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010.

In 2015, Menez accurately gave out the Kentucky Derby superfecta, which paid $1,268.20 for $2. In 2017, he tweeted out his Kentucky Derby picks, including Always Dreaming to win, and hit the Pick 4, which paid almost $6,900 on a $1 bet. In last year's Kentucky Derby, Menez gave out 18-1 Mystik Dan as a live longshot.

Menez has been on a roll since November. He crushed the late Pick 4 on Breeders' Cup Saturday for a $5,303 windfall. He nailed the winner, trifecta and superfecta in the Florida Derby for a $529.60 score and the winner and trifecta in the Blue Grass Stakes for a $761.96 jackpot. Hit the late Pick 4 on Kentucky Oaks day for $915.48. And in the Kentucky Derby, he hammered the exacta and trifecta for a $1,045 payout. Anyone who followed his lead on those picks is WAY UP.

Now, Menez has handicapped the 2025 Peter Pan Stakes field and revealed his picks. We can tell you that Menez is fading Captain Cook, even though he is the 2-1 favorite. "I'm going to fade the favorite Captain Cook because he's a major question mark at the distance," Menez told SportsLine. "He is a son of Practical Joke, whose progeny win at just 12% routing on the dirt." Menez is not using Captain Cook in any of his wagers.

However, Menez's top pick is a longshot who is "rounding back into form." Menez is including this horse in his 2025 Peter Pan Stakes bets, and so should you. You ABSOLUTELY NEED to see which horse it is before making any 2025 Peter Pan Stakes picks of your own!
