Entering the 2023 season, the Miami Dolphins offense had finished in the top 10 of points scored just once since 1996, ranking eighth in 2001 with a unit that was just 21st in yards gained. The team showed shades of having elite potential in Mike McDaniel's first season, and with Tua Tagovailoa playing all 17 games in 2023 following a year rife with concussion issues, the Dolphins offense reached its ceiling, finishing second in points scored and gaining 6.5 yards per play while finishing second in net yards per attempt and first in yards per rush.

Clearly McDaniel has found a winning formula on offense when he can keep his franchise quarterback upright, but the defense kept the team from winning the division title for the first time since 2008, giving up 69 points in a pair of losses to the Bills. The good news is that much of the damage done by the defense happened in a few select games, with Miami allowing no more than 21 points in 12 of its 17 games. Despite finishing 22nd in points allowed, the overall level of play of the defense allowed them to rank 10th in yards allowed.

It'll be on the defense to take a step forward in 2024, but there are questions that need to be answered, particularly up front with Christian Wilkins and Andrew Van Ginkel leaving in free agency and edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb rehabbing from significant injuries. Even with adding pieces like Chop Robinson in the draft and Shaq Barrett in free agency, it's anyone's guess how it'll all come together under a new defensive coordinator in Anthony Weaver.
