2020 Los Angeles Angels Preview: Projected rotation, starting lineup, prospects, win total

SportsLine's John Bollman went 14-1 on his MLB win total bets last season. Here he previews the Angels and tells you whether to go Over or Under 86 wins.

    Los Angeles Angels

    2019 record: 72-90

    Record in one-run games: 18-22

O/U win total from Willam Hill: 86

Key Additions: Joe Maddon (manager), Anthony Rendon, Jason Castro, Julio Teheran, Dylan Bundy

    Key Losses: Kole Calhoun

The Angeles made plenty of changes this season after a very underwhelming 72-win season in 2019. They had plenty of injuries, including to Tommy La Stella and Shohei Ohtani, but the Angeles also acquired Rendon and Castro for their lineup. They added Bundy, Teheran, and Ohtani to their rotation, with Ohtani set to return from Tommy John surgery around mid-May.

    Projected Rotation

    1) Shohei Ohtani (mid-May)

    2) Andrew Heaney

    3) Julio Teheran

    4) Griffin Canning

    5) Dylan Bundy/Felix Pena

The Angels added plenty of arms to bolster their starting pitching depth where they were victimized last season. Julio Teheran will provide a steady veteran presence, and Pena will battle it out with Bundy and plenty of other options for the fifth starter role. The Angels have plenty of starters with experience after they were forced into action last season, so that will help them with their overall depth in the rotation.

    Fantasy-relevant relievers

Hansel Robles (projected 35 saves, 2.76 ERA)

Ty Buttrey (projected 8 saves, 4.21 ERA)

    Major League-ready prospects

Jo Adell (OF), Patrick Sandoval (SP)

    Projected Lineup

    1) Tommy La Stella

    2) Mike Trout

    3) Anthony Rendon

    4) Shohei Ohtani

    5) Justin Upton

    6) Albert Pujols

    7) Brian Goodwin

    8) Andrelton Simmons

    9) Jason Castro

This lineup is looking like one of the best in the American League after the addition of Rendon and the return of La Stella. It will look even better once Jo Adell is called up to take Brian Goodwin's place in the outfield. This lineup projects to be in the top five in the AL in runs scored and should have no problem in an overall sense, as long as they avoid season-ending injuries.

    Key bench players

David Fletcher, Matt Thaiss, Max Stassi
