It has been an interesting day on social media with the news first leaking that UTSA star QB Frank Harris would not play and most not believing it -- and now we have official word that he's doubtful. We knew Marshall's starting QB was out. I have no idea what to do with this spread now but let's throw a little down on the total in a matchup of backup QBs.
As we've seen, it's a bit hard to tell about how these teams approach their bowls. Sometimes, things change during the course of action...WKU looked like it didn't want to be there until late in the first half of the Famous Toastery Bowl on Monday before a whirlwind rally caught ODU, forced OT, and then the Tops winning 38-35. But Marshall looks an especially tough sell, having faded to lose six of its last eight in the reg season, and now QB Cam Fancher has transferred out amid controversy before this Frisco Bowl. Jeff Traylor is still to win a bowl at UTSA, and the send-off game for many Roadrunner seniors, including long-serving QB Frank Harris. Play UTSA (Frisco Bowl)
On paper, this game looks to be an absolute mismatch. A motivated UTSA team against a Marshall team that floundered down the stretch and is without its starting QB, Cam Fancher. The Roadrunners went 7-1, while the Thundering Herd went 2-6 in their final eight games. Also, Marshall went 0-5 ATS against teams with a winning record this season, which isn't a good formula against a motivated UTSA team. This one shouldn't be close: UTSA 38, Marshall 17.
This line has shot up a few points, but I still think there is value in taking UTSA who are likely a lot hungrier for this bowl win. Marshall sputtered toward the end of the season but mangaed to win some games down the stretch to become bowl eligible. With that said, they will be without some key players, including their QB Cam Fancher. UTSA has most of their players for this game, including Frank Harris and Joshua Cephus who are seeking a proper send off in their final games.
