BELK BOWL -- Both teams come into this game playing inspired ball, which explains the close line. I like how the Hokies' defense consistently is in attack mode. Kentucky's offense has gained confidence over the last three contests, but I believe the Wildcats will meet their match in Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster's final game.
BELK BOWL -- If there is any question on which side wields a motivational edge, consider that legendary Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster works his final game before retirement. He has been gifted several weeks to plot against Kentucky’s one-dimensional offense operated by WR-turned-QB Lynn Bowden Jr. The Hokies will be primed to impede the Wildcats’ fourth-rated ground attack. Tech coach Justin Fuentes, with help from Foster, is 3-1 ATS in the postseason.
BELK BOWL -- My model says that the Wildcats cover the spread 68 percent of the time, so you're getting great value playing them at this point spread. Kentucky is riding a three-game winning streak during which it has outscored its opponents 133-34. The Wildcats haven't allowed more than 17 points in any of their last five contests. That streak may end here, but Kentucky's offense should keep on rolling.
BELK BOWL -- It's clear that the oddsmakers have not paid attention to the Belk Bowl's history. This is a game that gets weird often, and has averaged 64.6 points per game in its eight-year history. The Over has also been profitable with both of these teams in nonconference games. Since 2014 it is 20-7 in Kentucky's and 17-10-1 in Virginia Tech's. Expect points and fun.
BELK BOWL -- We are in bowl season and people are STILL doubting the Wildcats, coach Mark Stoops and do-everything star Lynn Bowden. Do that at your own peril. Bowden is off to the NFL after this game, but rushed for over 1,200 yards after converting to quarterback from wide receiver in the middle of the season. Every defense knows what is coming, but nobody has been able to stop Bowden. He'll go out in style with a win in Charlotte.
BELK BOWL -- Several changes at the quarterback position by Virginia Tech proved to be a recipe for success. Sophomore Hendon Hooker has more than a 5-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio (11 TDs, two picks). More importantly, the Hokies have the proper plays to match Hooker's skill set. Grab Virginia Tech in this one.
