According to KenPom, the ASUN ranks No. 1 among all conferences in offensive efficiency, No. 1 in three-point percentage, No. 3 in effective field goal percentage and No. 1 in not turning the ball over. The league also has 9 teams that rank outside the top 300 in defensive efficiency, which contributes to those good offensive numbers. Here we get Queens, one of the most-uptempo teams in the country, playing for its postseason life against a FGCU squad that would prefer to slow it down but got sped up in each of the two regular season meetings. Each of those 2 previous meetings went over the total, and I'm expecting Monday's tournament opener to do so as well.
The Atlantic Sun tournament starts tonight and pairs two teams that are both playing well against each other. Yes, each team is near the bottom of their conference standings, and therefore playing the "play-in" game, but they've both won 3 of their last 4. FGCU defeated Queens 10 days ago 90-81 but that was thanks in part to some hot shooting from FGCU. I think Queens keeps this one close and has a shot at an outright win.
We'll see if the Queens trendlines continue into the A-Sun Tourney. Even on nights when the Royals haven't gone "over" in recent weeks, there have usually been extenuating circumstances related to the number, such as a "total" posted at 174.5 on Friday vs. Kennesaw State (scoreline landed on 173) and another at 159 (for a game that landed 158) last week vs. Stetson. Tonight's "total" at Fort Myers isn't that high, and these two recently played a February 24 game that landed 171 on this same floor. Queens and its 81 ppg offense, led by G A.J. McKee (18.3 ppg), knows only how to play fast, and doubt conference tourney action alters that dynamic. Play Queens-FGCU "Over"
