Before we know it, the 2023 NFL season will be upon us, and there is a large amount of optimism surrounding the Miami Dolphins. The club ended its five-year playoff drought last season and gave the AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills a run for their money in their wild-card battle, overcoming a 17-point deficit with its third-string quarterback to take the lead in the third quarter before suffering a 34-31 loss.

Miami's success in 2023 likely will depend on the health of Tua Tagovailoa, who showed flashes of brilliance last year but landed in concussion protocol twice and missed a total of five games - including the playoff meeting with Buffalo. The 25-year-old, who was the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, still managed to set career highs of 3,548 passing yards and 25 touchdown tosses while leading the league with a 105.5 passer rating.

Tagovailoa has one of the top receiving duos at his disposal in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The 29-year-old Hill also posted career bests last season with 119 catches and 1,710 yards, which was the second-highest total in the NFL. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Waddle avoided the dreaded sophomore jinx as he gave the Dolphins two players in the top seven with 1,356 yards on 75 receptions. General manager Chris Grier gave Tagovailoa another potential weapon this offseason by signing wideout Braxton Berrios, who had a disappointing 2022 with the New York Jets but was a triple threat the previous year as he recorded touchdowns via receiving, rushing and kickoff return.

The Dolphins struggled on the other side of the ball last season, ranking 27th in passing defense and 24th in points allowed. They did a fine job addressing their problems by hiring Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator. The 64-year-old held that position for five other NFL teams over his career and is notorious for having his defenses rank among the league's best in both yards and points allowed.

Fangio will have an improved secondary with which to work as Miami acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a trade, signed safety DeShon Elliott and selected corner Cam Smith with their first pick (a second-rounder) in this year's draft. A six-time Pro Bowler, Ramsey has been one of the best at his position since making his NFL debut with Jacksonville in 2016 and joins Xavien Howard to give the Dolphins a superb tandem that will make life miserable for opposing receivers.
