The Kansas City Chiefs will have one thing on their mind as they enter the 2023 NFL season: becoming the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champion in nearly two decades. Kansas City won its second title in four years last campaign and now looks to go back-to-back, something that hasn't been accomplished since the New England Patriots did it in 2003 and 2004. The road became a little more bumpy during the offseason, however.

Kansas City still has the best signal-caller on the planet in Patrick Mahomes, but another worthy adversary joined an AFC contingent that already featured Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson as the New York Jets acquired four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in April. Mahomes, who won his second MVP award last season, remains the class of the conference, but he'll need to be at the top of his game for the Chiefs to win another championship.

Mahomes proved last year that he can get the job done with a less accomplished group of offensive weapons at his disposal, as top receiver Tyreek Hill was traded to Miami in March 2022. Now, the 27-year-old will need to work even more magic as he starts this season with even less with which to work. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman departed via free agency and Kadarius Toney, who now is the team's top wideout after making only 14 catches in seven regular-season games and seven in three playoff contests following his acquisition from the New York Giants last October, is likely to miss the start of the campaign as he recovers from surgery to repair the torn meniscus he suffered in the Chiefs' first practice of training camp.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who spent his first four NFL seasons with Rodgers in Green Bay before joining Kansas City, figures to be even more involved in the offense in 2023. The 28-year-old made a career-high 42 catches for 687 yards and two touchdowns in his first year with Mahomes. The Chiefs also hope for a big rookie campaign from Rashee Rice, who was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft after hauling in 96 passes for 1,355 yards and 10 TDs in 12 games at SMU last year.

Mahomes, who threw for a career-high 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2022, still has his favorite target in Travis Kelce. The 33-year-old tight end is coming off his seventh consecutive 1,000-yard season as he amassed 1,338 while setting career highs with 110 receptions and 12 TD catches. The Chiefs also continued to provide great protection for Mahomes as they replaced departed tackles Orlando Brown and Andrew Wylie with Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith.
