What worries me about this pick is it almost seems too obvious. Virginia Tech is a lot better than the Saint Louis squad it will be facing to close out Friday night's action. Saint Louis' defense is good, but Tech's is better, and the offenses don't even seem to be playing the same sport most of the time. The Billikens offense is downright painful to watch, and the best way to sum it all up is to tell you that they only make 59.8 percent of their free throws. The Hokies will roll in this one.
Buzz Williams' Hokies are solid on both offense and defense. They're comfortable in an uptempo game or a slow down game and they are coming off a loss to Florida State. Tech also returns point guard Justin Robinson, a three-point upgrade to the power rating. Robinson is a great passer that shoots 40 pecent on 3's. Tech's defense forces teams to beat it from the outside and Saint Louis is one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country. The Hokies defense will be too much for the Billikens and if you cant' score you cant keep up.
You don't usually see a four seed as a double digit favorite, but Virginia Tech isn't the average four seed, and Saint Louis isn't exactly a powerhouse. My numbers suggest this line should be -13.5 with Terry Blackshear leading the way for the Virginia Tech.
The Hokies have Terry Blackshear, they've got Nickeil Alexander-Walker, they've got two really good players who can score and hit 3's. The one problem is they've have problems closing, but I don't think that will be an issue Friday. Lay the points.
