NFL Week 5: Josh Allen clears concussion protocol, betting market trends toward Buffalo Bills

Allen will play on Sunday and the point spread seemingly reflects that.

With only two teams enjoying byes in Week 5, the NFL slate is jam-packed with quality action. The Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans will square off in what is expected to be the lowest-scoring game of the weekend (at least according to the over/under) but, on Saturday morning, word broke that the Bills will have the services of starting quarterback Josh Allen

Because the baseline expectation was that Allen would play despite being in the concussion protocol, the betting market didn't react violently after the news. However, there was activity, both on the point spread and the total. DraftKings SportsBook didn't move from the key number of -3, but the juice changed significantly, with Buffalo moving from -110 to -120 almost instantly. There were shops, from Circa Sports to Caesars, that actually did move the line from three, though, and the Bills are now 2.5-point underdogs in a variety of places.

As for the total, the number still resides in the 30's but Allen's arrival pushed the over/under from 38.5 to 39 or even 39.5 in a couple of places. That might not seem like much but, in an industry that relies heavily on the smallest edges, taking advantage of the best number is, of course, critical to overall success.

Allen playing isn't a shock by any means but the difference between the former first-round pick and Matt Barkley is real and, if nothing else, the Bills are better positioned to score points against Tennessee's defense.
