Raiders' Josh Jacobs 2023 NFL season props, odds: 2022 rushing champion will not report for start of training camp Tuesday

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs will not report to training camp.

The Las Vegas Raiders open their training camp for veteran players on Tuesday, and apparently the reigning NFL rushing king, former Alabama star Josh Jacobs, will not be on hand because he's unhappy with having to play this season on the franchise tag. The deadline for Jacobs and the Raiders to agree to a long-term extension has passed, so Jacobs will either play on the tag for $10.09 million or sits out games to prove a point. Jacobs is +1500 at DraftKings to lead the league in rushing yards again.

The Raiders wouldn't actually be in this situation had they exercised the first-year rookie option on Jacobs' contract last offseason, but opted not to. The decision didn't come as a huge shock, as Jacobs had been solid but not great in 2021 and had not played more than 15 games in a season yet.

But last year, the No. 24 overall pick in the 2019 draft really took to the new offense of coach Josh McDaniels. Jacobs played all 17 games and his 1,653 rushing yards were the second-most in franchise history, and 115 more than second-place Derrick Henry (+650 to lead this year) of the Titans among NFL leaders. Jacobs, the first player in franchise history to reach 2,000 scrimmage yards since Marcus Allen in 1985, was named to his second career Pro Bowl and named first-team All-Pro for the first time.

Below is a quick summary of some Jacobs 2023 season props from DraftKings. His individual over/under numbers are not posted yet as the sportsbooks want to have some clarity on his Week 1 availability (the same goes for the Giants' Saquon Barkley, who also may hold out):

    • To lead NFL in rushing yards:  +1500
    • To lead NFL in rushing TDs: +1300
    • To win Offensive Player of the Year: +6000
    • To have at least eight 100-yard games rushing: +700

Because Jacobs has not signed the franchise tag tender, he can't be fined for missing training camp. On Monday, Jacobs was spotted flying out of Las Vegas. He reportedly plans to skip all of camp and the entire preseason. Jacobs can't be fined for those, either. But he would lose $561,111 for each regular-season game he might miss.

It's obviously not ideal for Jacobs to miss any time considering the Raiders have a new starting quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacobs' potential long-term replacement already on the roster in Zamir White, a 2022 fourth-round pick.

Las Vegas is a 3.5-point underdog for Week 1 in Denver. Jacobs missing the game certainly could affect that number and a few books have early 4s. The SportsLine Projection Model forecasts Jacobs for 14.1 carries for 59 yards and 0.43 touchdowns.
