Justin Fields odds: Has star quarterback played his final game for Ohio State? Quite likely

Ohio State will not play a fall football season, and that could have major ramifications for star quarterback Justin Fields.

In the wake of the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceling their fall football seasons and hoping to play in the spring, the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted this: "Several top college football players are lining up agents and preparing to opt-out. This should play out over the next few days and will alter who plays in the spring." The biggest potential opt-out would be quarterback Justin Fields at Ohio State as he had been the 2020 Heisman Trophy betting favorite at William Hill sportsbook.

When the Big Ten announced its decision, Fields tweeted simply: "Smh.." He had been part of the #WeWantToPlay movement and had previously tweeted that "there's been too much work put in" to put the season on hold.

As of now, the NFL has said it was not planning to move the combine from February or the draft from late April in 2021 – although in theory that could change if the ACC, Big 12 and SEC fail to finish their hoped-for fall seasons. However, assuming those leagues do start play next month and are able to finish, what point would top NFL draft-eligible prospects from the Big Ten or Pac-12 have for playing in the spring?

There are really only downsides for Fields to play in the spring. Currently he's the No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2021 via the CBS Sports Big Board, behind Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Is it worth it for Fields to play simply to possibly move up from the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft to No. 1? There's not much financial difference.

This year's No. 1 overall pick, LSU QB Joe Burrow, signed a four-year, $36 million fully guaranteed contract with the Cincinnati Bengals that included a $23.9 million signing bonus. The No. 2 pick, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young, signed a four-year, $34.56 million fully guaranteed contract with the Washington Football Team (almost said Redskins) that included a $22.697 million signing bonus.

If Fields were to suffer a somewhat major injury during a fall college football season, he would still potentially be ready by the Combine and for workouts for NFL teams. If he were to suffer the same injury playing in the spring, that could scare off few teams from drafting Fields because he wouldn't be able to work out for clubs while rehabbing.

Think of what happened to former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, who dropped to No. 5 overall in this year's draft to the Dolphins because of hip surgery and the fact teams couldn't work him out or give him a physical due to the coronavirus pandemic. Tua is healthy now and competing for Miami's starting job. Had he suffered the same injury in spring football, he wouldn't be ready yet.

There's also really nowhere to go but down for Fields statistically off his amazing 2019 season with the Buckeyes as he completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,273 yards while accounting for 51 touchdowns. The Georgia transfer was the first QB in Big Ten history with 40 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs in the same season and his 41-3 TD:INT ratio was the best in the country. Fields was third in the Heisman voting and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

It's not as if Fields can win the Heisman this season, although what happens with that trophy in a potential split college football campaign is up in the air. And it's not as if Fields can play for a national title if only the Big Ten and Pac-12 are playing in the spring.

Could Fields transfer to an ACC, Big 12 or SEC school for the fall? (Wouldn't it be incredibly interesting to see Fields back at Georgia?) It seems way too late for that, even if the NCAA were to allow it.
