Hot weather affecting MLB totals? Tuesday was historic Grand Salami offensive night across baseball - except for AL East teams

Offenses were on display Tuesday around MLB.

Tuesday was not a good night in Major League Baseball to bet Under game totals. There were 197 total runs scored Tuesday, the second-most of any single day in the past 10 years. It also marked the first time MLB history that 12 different teams scored double-digit runs in a game. There has been extreme heat in the northern hemisphere for the past several days. It's not hard to find a correlation between the weather and some of that offense.

There were four games in which both teams scored at least 10 runs, an MLB first on a single day since 1894. Those were: Mets 11, White Sox 10; Diamondbacks 16, Braves 13; Giants 11, Reds 10; and Royals 11, Tigers 10. It was Arizona's first-ever game in which each team scored at least 13 runs and the first in the majors since the White Sox beat the Cubs 17-13 on Aug. 27, 2021.

Six players hit multiple home runs Tuesday, the most in any day this season. They were: Atlanta's Austin Riley, Arizona's Christian Walker, Detroit's Spencer Torkelson, San Francisco's Wilmer Flores, Cleveland's Josh Naylor and New York Mets rookie Francisco Alvarez.

The AL East is baseball's best division with every team holding a winning record, but the five AL East teams combined to score only eight runs Tuesday -- Boston was shut out in Oakland. The AL Central is MLB's worst division with only the Twins over .500 and its five teams totaled 51 runs, with each scoring at least 10. There were definitely some bad starting pitchers Tuesday, but a few good ones pitched well:

    • Phillies' Aaron Nola -- Allowed two earned over 7.1 innings in a win vs. Brewers.
    • Padres' Joe Musgrove – Allowed one earned over 6 innings in a win at Blue Jays.
    • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi – Allowed zero earned over 6 innings in a win vs. Rays.
    • Twins' Bailey Ober – Allowed three earned over 6 innings in a win at Mariners.

Good pitching is usually able to slow down good hitting, if you're looking for a takeaway.

If you have never bet a Grand Salami in baseball, it's the total amount of runs scored in any given day. That number is set at Over/Under 142.5 for Wednesday as a comparison. Obviously, the sportsbooks take weather into account, but the day's starting pitchers are the biggest factors.

There are some quality starting pitchers going today. Among them are the L.A. Dodgers' Julio Urias vs. Baltimore; Texas' Jon Gray vs. Tampa Bay; Miami's 2022 Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara vs. St. Louis; three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander of the Mets vs. the White Sox; and Seattle's Luis Castillo vs. Minnesota to name a few.
