2023 Heisman Trophy odds: Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman with biggest odds jump in nation at sportsbook

Conner Weigman is taking a lot of action at one sportsbook to win the Heisman Trophy.

Whether Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is actually on a hot seat entering the 2023 college football season is up for some debate. The results for the most part haven't been there, but Fisher also has a buyout worth about $77 million and that's a lot of money to eat, even at Texas A&M. Fisher did make a big move this offseason in hiring Bobby Petrino as his offensive coordinator – which could mean big things for Aggies QB Conner Weigman. At least bettors at BetMGM seem to think so.

On the site's 2023 Heisman Trophy odds, Weigman opened as a +10000 long shot but is now +4000, the biggest improvement of odds of any player at the book to win the award. Could be that bettors in the Lone Star State are simply very eager for this year because they also are putting a ton of money on Texas QB Quinn Ewers to win the Heisman.

Weigman, the No. 3 quarterback recruit in the Class of 2022 via sister-site 247 Sports, split time with Haynes King and Max Johnson last season with the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Weigman playing in five games with four starts (2-2 record) as a true freshman. He set a school freshman record with 338 yards passing against Ole Miss and completed 12 of 18 for two TDs in an upset of LSU, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Overall, Weigman completed 55.3% of his passes (must improve) for 896 yards, eight TDs and no picks while rushing for 97 yards.

Johnson is still with the Aggies, but it's Weigman's starting job to lose as he ran with the starters during the Maroon & White Game. Over at 247Sports, Weigman is ranked No. 9 overall out of the 14 projected starting SEC signal-callers.

While Petrino has some notable off-the-field issues, the dude is a brilliant offensive coach – look at his college success with the likes of QBs Lamar Jackson, Ryan Mallett and Brian Brohm. Petrino had accepted the same position at UNLV under first-year coach Barry Odom before resigning and taking the OC job at A&M. That's a no-brainer choice but doesn't add to Petrino's not-sterling reputation.

Darrell Dickey served as an offensive consultant under Fisher rather than play-caller and split offensive duties with receivers coach James Coley in 2022 but was let go. The Aggies' ranked 101st in scoring last season and 84th in passing. They haven't finished in the Top 25 of scoring since Fisher's first season.

To win the Heisman, Weigman (or anyone) has to play on a very good team – which A&M wasn't last year at 5-7. But Fisher does bring 18 starters back. The only true road game for the Aggies before hosting Alabama on Oct. 7 is at Miami, so if A&M wins that it might be unbeaten when it faces the Tide, which would only help Weigman's chances .. as would obviously winning that game.

The Aggies have an Over/Under win total of 8. The school has had two Heisman winners: halfback John David Crow in 1957 and QB Johnny Manziel in 2012.
