2023 AL Rookie of the Year odds: Gunnar Henderson, Masataka Yoshida likely in two-man race following Josh Jung injury

The AL Rookie of the Year race is likely down to two players.

About two weeks ago, there was essentially a three-way consensus tie atop the odds board at sportsbooks for 2023 American League Rookie of the Year honors between the Rangers' Josh Jung, Orioles' Gunnar Henderson and Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida. However, Jung has fallen way back to +1500 on the updated board at DraftKings after suffering a left thumb fracture Sunday that could cost him the rest of the regular season.

Jung, who entered Sunday's game batting .275 with 22 home runs and 67 RBI, left shortly after turning a 5-4 double play against the Marlins. With runners on first and second, Miami's Jorge Soler hit a sharp line drive (109.4 mph) to the hot corner at Jung, who couldn't hang on to the ball and it clearly impacted that left thumb. Jung then picked it up and stepped on third before firing to second to complete the double play.

He left the game after the next batter. X-rays revealed a fracture for the All-Star, who will see specialist. If surgery is required, Jung is likely looking at a 6-8 week absence but could return for the postseason – Texas is on pace to get a first-round bye in the AL postseason if it wins the West. The Rangers are -120 favorites with Houston at +125. For a point of comparison, Philadelphia's Bryce Harper and Jose Altuve both missed two full months with similar injuries.

Ezekiel Duran is likely to get most of the playing time at third. When Corey Seager landed on the injured list for six weeks with a hamstring strain from April to May, Duran largely became the team's everyday shortstop and played well. However, Duran slashed an ugly .186/.247/.241 in July, and is hitting just .143 through six August games. Duran has played his best this season with regular playing time in the infield, which he hasn't gotten since Seager returned. Utilityman Josh Smith could also fill in at third. Texas starts a six-game road trip Monday night in Oakland. All-Star catcher Jonah Heim is also on the IL and might miss the rest of the year. The Rangers could have a tough time holding off the Astros in the division.

Baltimore's Henderson (.243, 19 HR, 51 RBI) is now the -200 leader for AL Rookie of the Year -- and it doesn't hurt that the Orioles now have the best record in the Junior Circuit. Boston's Yoshida (.306, 12 HR, 54 RBI) is +180.

His teammate, Triston Casas, has shot all the way up to +1500 after being named AL Rookie of the Month for July, but it's probably too late for Casas to win the big award. Casas became the 10th Red Sox player ever to take home AL Rookie of the Month and the first since fellow first baseman Bobby Dalbec won it in August 2021. Jung won it the first two months of this season and Henderson did so in June.
