Next NFL head coach fired betting odds: Could Vikings dump Mike Zimmer during current bye week?

Is it possible that Mike Zimmer has coached his final game for the disappointing Vikings?

The Minnesota Vikings signed both general manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer to multi-year extensions through 2023 in the summer. Ownership might be hugely regretting those decisions with the projected NFC North contenders at 1-5 following Sunday's embarrassing 40-23 home loss to previously winless Atlanta – which was playing its first game since firing its coach. SportsLine has updated odds on the next NFL coach fired, and Zimmer has seen his odds shrink from following Week 5.

The Vikings hadn't opened a year with a 1-5 record since 2013. After that season, the Wilf family, which owns the team, dumped former head coach Leslie Frazier and ushered in a new era under Zimmer.

Zimmer is a defensive-minded guy and the Vikings are allowing 32.0 points per game, second-worst in the NFL. It hasn't helped the Pro Bowl defensive end Danielle Hunter has yet to play this season due to a neck injury and might not, but the team also traded for another excellent young defensive end before the season in Yannick Ngakoue. He has been pretty good with five sacks.

Offensively, QB Kirk Cousins, who is under contract through the 2022 season with a combined cap hit the next two years at $76 million, looks lost. The three interceptions Cousins threw before halftime Sunday were his most in a first half in his career. His 10 picks lead the NFL after having just six in all of 2019.

All things being equal, teams/owners would prefer to make a coaching change during a bye week and that's what the Vikings are on in Week 7.

Jacksonville may have dumped Coach Doug Marrone by the time you read this as the Jaguars have regressed each week since a Week 1 upset of the Colts. They were dominated at home by what had been a one-win Lions team – there were reports that Detroit was prepared to fire Matt Patricia if it lost vs. the Jaguars.

Marrone says he has no plans to fire defensive coordinator Todd Wash. Why not? The Lions' 34 points on Sunday marked the fifth consecutive game this season the Jacksonville defense has allowed 30 or more points, a franchise record and one game shy of tying the league record. Jacksonville is at the LA Chargers this Sunday and opened as an 8-point underdog.

Then there's Adam Gase and the Jets. They are the NFL's only winless team following an embarrassing 24-0 loss in Miami on Sunday and have been outscored by a whopping 110 points. The Jets have been shutout in an NFL-high 38 quarters since the beginning of last season – oh, and Gase is supposedly an excellent offensive mind.

There's frankly no explanation why Gase is still employed. New York's bye is Week 10. The Jets are +11 this Sunday at home vs. Buffalo.
