The New York Jets acquired veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas on Tuesday, sending a sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots in order to bolster the team's depth chart. On Wednesday, the rationale behind that maneuver became even more clear, with word breaking that wide receiver Quincy Enunwa will miss the remainder of the 2019 season with a neck injury.

At this juncture, there is no public diagnosis for Enunwa's ailment, nor is there any indication that he will need surgery. However, the 27-year-old wide receiver missed the entire 2017 campaign with a neck injury, causing additional concern.

"The way he plays, everything is violent," Jets head coach Adam Gase told ESPN. "He gives everything he has. I feel for him in the aspect that he's going through something like this. It's not something that's easy for guys that have been doing this their whole life."

Enunwa played the vast majority of New York's Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills, though he finished the afternoon with only one catch. The Jets have Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder and the newly-acquired Thomas to provide options for quarterback Sam Darnold but, in the same breath, New York invested a four-year, $33.4 million contract in Enunwa before this season and this is a significant blow to the roster.

New York will square off against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night, with the Jets entering the game as 2.5-point home underdogs.
