Josh Rosen trade? Chicago Bears would make sense to acquire Miami Dolphins quarterback

The Miami Dolphins are taking calls about quarterback and former Top-10 pick Josh Rosen. One team makes all the sense in the world to deal for him.

It might seem laughable now, but many scouts/experts were very high on UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen in the 2018 NFL Draft. For example, in the final Top 32 prospect rankings by CBS Sports' Pete Prisco in April that year, he ranked Rosen as the 13th-best player in the class and ahead of fellow quarterbacks Baker Mayfield (went No. 1 overall to Browns) and Sam Darnold (No. 3 to Jets).

Here's what Prisco wrote: "He's a polished passer who looks to be NFL ready. He throws a nice football and he has a feel for the passing game. But there are concerns about his drive by some scouts."

The Arizona Cardinals traded up to No. 10 in the draft to take Rosen, and he was historically bad as a rookie – although it wasn't all his fault as that Cardinals team was atrocious offensively as a whole (including coaching staff). Arizona gave up on Rosen after one year, trading him to Miami and taking Kyler Murray at No. 1 overall in the 2019 draft.

Rosen got into six games last year for the Dolphins and started three, losing them all (he's 3-13 as an NFL starter). He completed 58 of 109 passes (53.2 percent) of his passes for 567 yards (ghastly 5.2 yards per attempt) with one touchdown and five picks. His rating was 52.0.

Now that Miami has its quarterback of the future in 2020 No. 5 overall pick Tua Tagovailoa as well as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick on the roster, Rosen's days in south Florida could be numbered. The NFL Network's Michael Giardi reported this week that teams have called the Dolphins about Rosen.

Back in February, the Miami Herald reportedly it was "likely" that Rosen remained on the team. He has very reasonable cap hits of $2.1 million and $2.9 million over the next two seasons. Teams usually carry only two quarterbacks on their game-day rosters, though, and Miami also has QB Jake Rudock (practice squad) under contract.

Thus, Rosen could be expendable for a draft pick. If the Dolphins were to trade him? The Chicago Bears might make the most sense as a landing spot – and it would probably only cost a later-round 2021 selection. Earlier in May, the Bears declined the fifth-year rookie option on Mitchell Trubisky's contract, and history says he's a goner after this year.

Veteran Nick Foles likely starts in 2020 but isn't the long-term answer. The only other quarterback on the roster is Tyler Bray, who is 28 and has attempted one NFL pass in his journeyman career.

Bears GM Ryan Pace almost impossibly has not drafted a quarterback since making the Trubisky mistake at No. 2 overall in 2017. Rosen might not be salvageable, but he is a better potential long-term solution than Bray, could serve a possible backup/competition to Foles in 2021 and would cost next to nothing. Pace definitely hasn't been afraid to deal draft picks.

Chicago has an Over-Under win total of 8 this season at William Hill sportsbook, while Miami is at 6. The teams don't play each other.
