Colts 2021 NFL odds: Carson Wentz out indefinitely with injury; Indianapolis futures odds would change dramatically if Jacob Eason Week 1 starting QB

Potentially terrible news for the Indianapolis Colts on QB Carson Wentz.

As if today wasn't going to be busy enough recapping the NBA Draft/Russell Westbrook trade and with it being the day of the MLB Trade Deadline, comes potentially massive news out of the NFL in that new Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Carson Wentz is out indefinitely as he undergoes further testing on a foot injury that he suffered at the end of Thursday's practice. It was first reported by Adam Schefter. For now, the Colts' 2021 win total is set at Over/Under 10 at William Hill Sportsbook.

Wentz was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason to be reunited with Colts head coach Frank Reich, who was Wentz's offensive coordinator in 2017 when Wentz was having an MVP-caliber year -- he was a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro -- before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 14. Of course, Nick Foles took over and led the Eagles to their lone Super Bowl title.

According to Schefter, Jacob Eason took the reps with the first team at practice today. The former mega-recruit was a 2020 fourth-round pick out of the University of Washington who is yet to take an NFL snap – remember, there was no preseason a year ago. Rookie sixth-round pick Sam Ehlinger, who had a record-setting career at Texas, served as the No. 2.

Needless to say, if the Wentz injury is serious, that win total of 10 is going to plummet. Indy is currently -210 to make the playoffs and +175 to miss. The Colts and Titans are each +110 to win the AFC South – they tied at 11-5 last year, but Tennessee won the tiebreaker. See the SportsLine Projection model's forecast below.

One thing to keep in mind, again only if this injury is serious: Foles is very available via trade from the Chicago Bears. Former NFL Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III is a free agent. Another potential trade acquisition: Jaguars backup Gardner Minshew, but, again, this is only speculation. The Colts do have Super Bowl-caliber talent everywhere else.

Indianapolis is -2.5 on the NFL odds (for now) Week 1 at home vs. Seattle.
