Baltimore Ravens breakout candidate in 2020 season: Second-year receiver Miles Boykin

Wideout Miles Boykin could be in line for a breakout second season with the Ravens.

We've taken a look at few players CBS Sports has targeted as "one homegrown player still on a rookie contract who is key for each team's success" for this season, including the Eagles' Miles Sanders and Bears' Anthony Miller. Today, we examine Baltimore Ravens second-year wideout Miles Boykin among AFC North players. He's not a betting option at William Hill sportsbook to lead the NFL in receiving this season, though.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Boykin was a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. In his senior season, Boykin led the Irish with 59 catches, 872 yards and eight touchdowns. He had at least one TD catch in six straight games, the longest such streak by a Notre Dame wideout since Will Fuller in 2014.

Last year, Boykin played in every Ravens game but wasn't used much with just 22 targets from league MVP Lamar Jackson and 13 catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns. He was largely a non-factor in Baltimore's stunning Divisional Round home loss to the Tennessee Titans with three catches for 26 yards.

Boykin projects as a starter this year alongside Marquise Brown, who had much better numbers last year as a rookie, and veteran Willie Snead. There's still an outside chance the Ravens sign Antonio Brown as they have had internal discussions about that.

It might be tough for Boykin to get too many touches because the Ravens rushed the ball an NFL-high 596 times last year and threw an NFL-low 440 times. Boykin did excel as a blocking receiver in Baltimore's record-setting rushing attack.

Then again, if teams focus their pass coverage on the big-play Marquise Brown, that could lead to some big games for Boykin. At 6-foot-4, Boykin is five inches taller than Brown and about as fast as Boykin ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at the 2019 combine.

"We expect him to improve quite a bit with an offseason, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta told the team website in May. "He's a big, strong, fast and physical guy. Great attitude. The second year for most receivers is critical and we think he'll make a big jump."

Baltimore is an 8.5-point home favorite on the NFL odds for Week 1 vs. the Browns. Boykin did have a TD catch vs. Cleveland in 2019.
