49ers vs. Seahawks NFL Week 8 spread tips, betting odds: Chris Carson unlikely to play for Seattle

Seattle likely will be without top running back Chris Carson for Sunday's NFC West showdown with San Francisco … and maybe two more backs as well.

The Seattle Seahawks lost a wild game Sunday night at Arizona, 37-34 in overtime, to become the final NFC team to lose this season. In addition, the Seahawks saw top running back Chris Carson exit vs. the Cardinals with a foot injury, and he's being called week-to-week. That pretty much means he's not playing this Sunday at home vs. the San Francisco 49ers. Seattle, which still leads the NFC West, is a 3-point favorite on the William Hill NFL odds.

Carson had five carries for 34 yards before leaving and has 323 yards and three scores on 66 carries this season, good for a career-best yards per carry of 4.9 (10th in the NFL).  He also has 22 catches for 147 yards and three scores. That it's just a mid-foot sprain is good news. Carson, a 2017 seventh-round steal out of Oklahoma State, has had trouble staying healthy in his career, never playing all 16 games. The 26-year-old is in a contract year as well.

Travis Homer took on an increased role Sunday when Carson left, but Homer hurt his knee – although not seriously. Carlos Hyde likely will be the featured back vs. the Niners. He had 68 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries vs. Arizona.

Well, that's if Hyde is healthy. Coach Pete Carroll revealed Monday that Hyde had his hamstring tighten up on him late in the Cardinals game. If he's out too, the Seahawks probably would turn to fourth-round rookie DeeJay Dallas. The Seahawks aren't carrying any running backs on their practice squad at the moment. They might have to go sign someone like Marshawn Lynch.

Last year, the Niners and Seahawks played two thrilling games both won by the Niners. The one in the Bay Area went to overtime and the one in Seattle ended 26-21 in Week 17 with Seahawks tight end Jacob Hollister being tackled right at the San Francisco goal line as time expired. That win earned the Niners the NFC West title and conference's top seed. Carson missed the Week 17 game and had 25 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown in the other one. Seattle still has covered 12 of the past 17 meetings on the NFL picks.

Also in question for this game is Seahawks Pro Bowl cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who left vs. Arizona in the third quarter after he got concussed, so he's in the protocol. After Griffin got hurt, Seattle blew two 10-point leads. Griffin, who also suffered a concussion as a rookie in 2017, has 28 tackles, seven passes defensed and two picks this year.
