Which NFL head coach will be fired next?

Jay Gruden is gone in Washington but he may not be alone in the near future.

The Washington Redskins fired Jay Gruden last week after an 0-5 start to the season, thus beginning the portion of the season where teams that are struggling will have to start seriously considering moving on or getting left behind. The Redskins went on to beat the Dolphins with Bill Callahan as the interim head coach and Callahan would love to see the squad get hot and give him an outside chance of keeping the role in a more permanent capacity.

As for Gruden's firing, Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post reported that Gruden was "summoned to Redskins Park for a 5 am ET meeting" and the team parted ways with the head coach after a 35-49-1 record.

"Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility," the Redskins said in a team-issued statement. "Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond."

That line of thinking could be applied to a number of other franchises and now everybody is wondering whose seat is hottest among head coaches in the NFL. SportsLine oddsmakers have taken a look at the NFL landscape and assigned lines to six coaches whose teams are off to underwhelming starts:

Who will be the next NFL head coach fired?

    Dan Quinn EVEN
    Jason Garrett 3-2
    Doug Marrone 5-1
    Mike Vrabel 10-1
    Anthony Lynn 12-1
    Pat Shurmur 15-1

Quinn stands out here for good reasons, with the Falcons allowing 52 points to the Houston Texans in Week 5 and then giving up 34 more points to the Cardinals last week. Quinn took over as the team's defensive coordinator, in addition to his head coaching duties, before the 2019 season and, with a 1-5 overall record to boot, it stands to reason that he could be coaching for his job.

Meanwhile, Garrett is the next biggest favorite, but the fact that the Cowboys started the season 3-0 and are still tied for first in the NFC East might buy him some time. Doug Marrone's Jaguars are 2-4, but the loss of Nick Foles was beyond his control and that might earn him a little leeway.

As for the long shots, Vrabel just made a quarterback switch and Shurmur is coaching a rookie quarterback who'd only be set back if he was forced to learn a new offense on the fly. That leaves Anthony Lynn as a darkhorse candidate at 12-1, though after making the playoffs a year ago he'd have to continue mounting losses before it's a serious possibility.
