Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams reportedly 'vows' not to play for them again

Mandatory mini-camps are underway across the NFL and, after a positive off-season, the Washington Redskins enter the 2019 campaign with real optimism. After all, the organization seems to be in better shape on paper after some interesting player acquisitions and Washington's future appears bright as a result. Unfortunately for the team, however, standout offensive tackle Trent Williams was not present for the team's workouts and a report from CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora foreshadows an ongoing problem.

La Canfora indicates that Williams' absence is not tied to financial concerns, but rather that he has "demanded a trade or his release from the club due to their handling of his recent medical situation." Beyond that, the report shares that Williams "has vowed not to play" for the Redskins, turning up the heat on an already volatile situation

Previously, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden referred to the absence of Williams as having to do with "the business side of football" with the potential of Williams seeking a reworked contract. If this stand-off is not financial, though, more uncertainty arises and the seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle may not be willing to stick around even with a new contract in place.

Williams was signed as the highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL prior to the 2015 season and, at this juncture, he remains in the upper echelon in terms of financial compensation. Beyond that, the Redskins would be in serious trouble at offensive tackle if Williams was not available to play, which is particularly noteworthy in the event that rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins begins the season as the team's starting quarterback.

The Redskins are still in a building phase and, as such, aren't expected to necessarily compete for the Super Bowl this season. Still, Williams' situation is of grave concern for the franchise and this could be a prolonged issue if the latest reporting proves accurate.
