Next NFL head coach fired betting odds: Jaguars' Doug Marrone leaps into unwanted favored role

Two NFL coaches have been fired already this season. Who might be next?

The Houston Texans fired Coach Bill O'Brien following a Week 4 loss. The Atlanta Falcons did the same to Dan Quinn after a Week 5 defeat. Could another coach get the axe following Week 6? SportsLine oddsmakers had Quinn listed as the favorite to be the second head coach fired, and the new leader to be third is Jacksonville's Doug Marrone at +150.

Marrone got himself briefly off the hot seat when the Jaguars upset the visiting Indianapolis Colts in the opener, but the Jags haven't won since and appear to be getting worse. On Sunday, they lost in Houston 30-14. It marked unwanted NFL history for the franchise as Jacksonville is the first team in NFL history to lose three consecutive games to previously winless teams, excluding season openers.

The Miami Dolphins had a zero in the win column in Week 3 and won in Jacksonville 31-13, the Bengals also did in Week 4 when they were 33-25 winners, and the Texans earned their first win Sunday under interim coach Romeo Crennel. Kicker Jags kicker Stephen Hauschka missed two field goals on Sunday and was cut on Monday. Usually it's a good thing when a team's QB throws for 300 yards, but now the Jags are 0-5 all-time when Gardner Minshew does.

The New York Jets' Adam Gase clearly isn't going to be back in 2021 but it would have seemed like if the Jets were going to fire him during the season it would have happened during a mini-bye week following a Week 4 Thursday night home loss to Denver. Gase did say Monday he is considering giving up the offensive play-calling. The winless Jets are ranked 32nd in scoring (15 points per game).

The Lions clearly will not be bringing back Matt Patricia in 2021, either, but they just had their bye week and if ownership was going to make an in-season move it would have happened then. Detroit hosts the Jaguars this Sunday and if the Jags, who are 3.5-point underdogs, get blown off the field, Marrone is probably gone by Sunday evening.  Perhaps GM David Caldwell too. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has head coaching experience and could take over the rest of the year.

Anthony Lynn might be lucky he's still employed today after the Bolts blew a 17-point lead Monday night in New Orleans and lost 30-27 in overtime – L.A.'s fourth straight loss by a TD or fewer. The Chargers are now the fifth team in NFL history to blow 17-point leads in back-to-back games. No team has ever lost three straight games when leading by 17+. The Chargers are on the bye in Week 6.
