New York Giants' long playoff odds get longer with season-ending injury to Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants got a double dose of bad news Sunday and now could be looking to sign Devonta Freeman.

Things aren't exactly going swimmingly thus far for first-year New York Giants head coach Joe Judge, who was a surprise hire to begin with. His team is 0-2 following Sunday's 17-13 loss in Chicago and reportedly will be without its best offensive player by far, running back Saquon Barkley, for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL. That diagnosis is expected to be confirmed later Monday (update: it was).  On the bright side, that helps the Giants' chances of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Big Blue's offense might have been the worst in the league even with Barkley but could be utterly inept without him. He was injured in the second quarter Sunday in Chicago and carted off the field. Barkley finished with four rushes for 28 yards.

The 23-year-old was the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as the No. 2 overall pick out of Penn State. He rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 scores and caught 91 passes for 721 yards and four TDs. If you had him on your Fantasy team, you probably reached the playoffs.

Barkley dealt with some ankle injuries last year and wasn't nearly as effective – although he did have a horrific offensive line – and rushed for 1,003 yards and six scores with 52 catches for 438 yards and two TDs. Barkley was +1200 at William Hill sportsbook to lead the NFL in rushing yards entering the season.

That O-Line hasn't appeared much better this year as the Giants have totaled just 29 points in losses to the Steelers and Bears. Barkley was historically bad in the opener with six yards on 15 carries. He was tackled behind the line of scrimmage 11 times, which is simply nuts.

Sunday's game was the first time that young QB Daniel Jones had had Barkley, tight end Evan Engram and wide receivers Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and Golden Tate all available in the same game. That barely lasted a quarter. New York is now +2500 to win the very mediocre NFC East.

Free-agent running back Devonta Freeman is scheduled to visit with the team on Tuesday. Makes all the sense in the world to sign him. The Giants opened as 4-point underdogs for Week 3 at home vs. the San Francisco 49ers, who had some major injury issues of their own Sunday (Nick Bosa reportedly tore his ACL too) but still routed the Jets at MetLife Stadium. Instead of flying back west, the Niners will stay in West Virginia this week.
