Gonzaga vs. UCLA Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament odds, trends: Bettors split down middle with Bruins' Adem Bona, David Singleton questionable

UCLA could be down two key players tonight vs. Gonzaga.

Gonzaga and UCLA have had two very memorable NCAA Tournament matchups: 17 years ago today, the Bruins won 73-71 in the Sweet 16, a game that became infamous due to Zags star Adam Morrison crying afterward. Two years ago, Gonzaga beat UCLA in the Final Four on an epic near-halfcourt buzzer-beater in overtime by Jalen Suggs. The rivalry is renewed tonight in the Sweet 16 in Las Vegas, and the Bruins could be rather short-handed. They are -1 at BetMGM, and the betting action is split. Click here for model picks.

Almost three weeks ago, UCLA lost junior forward Jaylen Clark (13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds per game) to a season-ending injury. He was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and clearly his absence will be felt against another ridiculously good Gonzaga offense that leads the nation in scoring (87.3 PPG) and field-goal percentage (52.6%).

Could two more key players miss tonight's game? Forward Adem Bona, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and senior guard David Singleton are both questionable.

Bona, if he plays, surely would be tasked at times with guarding Zags All-American big man Drew Timme. Bona (7.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.7 BPG) has played in both NCAA Tournament games but missed a couple in the Pac-12 Tournament. He aggravated his shoulder injury in the second half against Northwestern last weekend. A highly touted recruit, Bona was also named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team, so his absence could be glaring vs. Timme.

"He's a guy that can always take over a game," coach Mick Cronin said of Timme. "You can have him in check for 30 minutes, then he can dominate the last 10; he's just that kinda guy. He's been doing it for a long time; not an easy guy to deal with. Puts a lot of pressure on your defense."

Bona seems more likely to miss the Gonzaga game than Singleton (9.1 PPG), who hasn't appeared hampered this week while dealing with an ankle injury suffered against Northwestern. He's the team's best 3-point shooter at 42.5%. Singleton entered the starting lineup in Clark's absence, and he has scored in double figures in three of his last six appearances.

As of this writing, the betting on this game is completely split -- 50% of the tickets and handle have gone to each side. That's very unusual. On the total of 145.5, 53% of the bets and 55% of the money on are on the Under. If this goes Over, that's bad for UCLA's chances as it has limited the opposition to fewer than 70 points in 31 of 36 games this season and ranks No. 6 nationally in allowing 60.2 PPG.
