First NFL coach fired odds Week 3: Mike Zimmer of winless Vikings joins the hot seat betting list

The Minnesota Vikings have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was entering the final year of his contract as recently as July, but the team handed him a three-year extension on the eve of training camp. Could the Vikings already be having buyer's remorse? They are a surprising 0-2, and Zimmer's seat suddenly is quite warm. Would the team really fire him after just extending him? It has certainly happened around the NFL before. Vikings co-owner Zygi Wilf can afford it as he's worth a reported $5.5 billion or so.

Back in January, Zimmer named Andre Patterson and his son Adam as the team's co-defensive coordinators. That has hugely backfired thus far as Minnesota allowed 43 points and 522 yards in a Week 1 43-34 home loss to Green Bay and then 28 points and 354 yards in Sunday's 28-11 loss at Indianapolis. It hasn't helped that the Vikings are without Pro Bowl defensive end Danielle Hunter as he opened the season on injured reserve with a neck injury. He won't be eligible to return until Week 4.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins, who got a two-year contract extension in March, also deserves some blame. He had pretty good numbers vs. the Packers but was nothing short of terrible Sunday against the Colts in completing just 11 of 26 for 113 yards and three picks. His passer rating of 15.9 was the worst of his career and the lowest against a Colts defense since 2005. Minnesota had only 175 yards total. Cousins' season rating of 61.9 is the NFL's worst.

The Vikings were +160 betting favorites at William Hill entering the season to win the NFC North but already are two games out of first place in the division with Green Bay (-160 to win North currently) and Chicago (+240) both 2-0. The Vikings are now priced at +550.

All of the coaches on the hot seat odds list lost in Week 2.

It's frankly a minor miracle that Atlanta's Dan Quinn is still employed after his team somehow managed to choke away a 15-point lead in Dallas with less than two minutes remaining. The Atlanta players stood there and watched an onside kick roll, and it was recovered by the Cowboys to lead to the incredible 40-39 comeback victory. Teams all-time had been 440-0 in the NFL when scoring at least 39 points and not having a turnover in a game as Atlanta did.

Quinn claimed after that the players knew the onside kick rule – the receiving team can touch it whenever, but the kicking team must wait until it goes at least 10 yards or until the receiving team touches the ball -- but it sure didn't look that way. Quinn also said he wasn't planning any coaching changes following the debacle. Keith Armstrong is the team's special teams coach.

Rather oddly, the Falcons are winless and the Bears unbeaten, yet Atlanta opened as a 3.5-point home favorite for this Sunday's matchup.

Matt Patricia's Detroit Lions were up 14-3 in Green Bay after one quarter Sunday and then allowed the Packers to score 31 straight points in a 42-21 loss.

Adam Gase's New York Jets were manhandled by the 49ers even though San Francisco lost three of its best players during it to injury, including QB Jimmy Garoppolo and 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Nick Bosa. All the New York tabloids are screaming for the Jets to dump Gase, whose team has yet to even have a lead. Coach firings very rarely happen until after Week 4 of a season. The Jets are +10 this week at Indianapolis. That's the largest spread on the board.

The Chargers' Anthony Lynn made a very puzzling decision to not go for it on fourth-and-1 early in overtime against the Chiefs. Naturally, Kansas City then went right down the field to score and win.
