Euro 2016: Should Spain be such massive faves over Turkey?

Defending champ Spain faces a desperate Turkish side on Friday afternoon in Euro 2016. The Spaniards have the big names and the pedigree, but is the dog worth a look? Todd Fuhrman shares his recommendation.

Turkey vs. Spain, Allianz Riviera, Friday, 3 p.m. ET

    Turkey +800
    Spain -245
    Draw +355
    Total 2.5 (Under -125)

The Spaniards may claim the title of defending Euro Cup champions, but that's where the comparisons end to the side that won three straight major tournaments.

Gerard Pique rescuing three points from a pesky Czech side in their opening match prevented national panic on the Iberian peninsula. Spain struggled to capitalize in the attacking third without a true accomplished striker, yet were fully deserving of the result.

Spain enjoyed a decided 72 percent possession edge, putting five of 17 shot attempts on target. Their stat sheet dominance became evident with a 14-3 edge in corner kicks as well. The overmatched Czech side was perfectly content to sit back and absorb pressure, forcing the Spanish side into a moment or two of brilliance.

Turkey fell victim to a world-class strike from Luka Modric in the 41st minute and lost 1-0 to group darkhorse Croatia. Turkey owned a slight possession advantage yet felt the wrath of an outstanding Croatian midfield that fired 18 shots at the Turkish net with six hitting the target.

Turkish captain Arda Turan needs to be better for this side to advance. Turan never got himself in the flow of the match and was subbed out at the 65th minute by manager Fatih Terim.

The major question entering the tournament surrounded Turan's form, given his limited appearances this season at Barcelona. If Turkey is going to push the titleholders, they need the big names on the roster to step up big-time.

It's never easy to back a side knowing their primary goal is to absorb pressure and look for the counter attack. Spain has the championship pedigree with a roster chock full of international superstars. That's exactly why they’ve been installed as such large favorites, creating value on the dog.

I can't justify Spain's price, knowing they still struggle to score consistently. Don't get me wrong: Their nine clean sheets in the last 11 competitive matches have me concerned, but this has the makings of a street fight with Turkey throwing the kitchen sink at La Roja in the hopes of gaining a result.

The Play: Turkey +1.25 (risking 1.1 units to win 1 unit)

    Euro 2016 YTD: 1-3 (-3.4 units)
