Adam Gase odds: Will New York Jets fire embattled head coach during bye week?

Could Adam Gase's reign as Jets coach be over with the winless team now on its bye week?

During "Monday Night Countdown" before the Patriots-Jets game last evening, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Adam Gase would not return as New York's head coach in 2021. That's hardly a shock as Gase amazingly has more losses by at least 20 points (eight) than total wins (seven) as Jets head coach. The question now is: With the winless Jets on their bye week, will the team dump Gase or let him finish out 2020? SportsLine has released odds.

All things being equal, if an owner/GM is going to fire a head coach during the season, it makes the most sense during the bye week simply to ease the transition to the interim coach. GM Joe Douglas previously has vouched for Gase, but it would be CEO Christopher Johnson's call to make a change.

The Jets are 0-9 for the first time in franchise history and have been outscored by a whopping 147 points, but the team put up a good fight Monday against New England – and that alone may be enough for Gase to finish out the season. There have been multiple reports out of New York that the organization doesn't want to fire him during the year.

Up 27-17 midway through the fourth quarter Monday behind a strong game from backup QB Joe Flacco (Sam Darnold was out injured), the Jets remembered they are the Jets and would end up losing 30-27 on a last-second 51-yard field goal by New England's Nick Folk, who is a former Jet. For some reason, the Jets didn't call a timeout beforehand to ice Folk. That's on Gase.

Offensively, New York ran just four plays for three yards and a turnover in the fourth quarter and had the ball for only 1:24. Defensively, the pass coverage was much too soft in the final minutes in allowing Pats QB Cam Newton to get his team in position for the winning kick. That's why it's more likely Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is fired during the bye than Gase. Williams also has had some public missteps with comments. Then again, Williams is the only Jets assistant with NFL head coaching experience so in theory he could be the interim coach.

Another reason to keep Gase: It helps the Jets continue to tank and get into position for the No. 1 overall pick to take Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Losing to New England could have been the best thing for this franchise. New York is at the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11.
