New York Jets-Miami Dolphins Odds and Picks Against the Spread

The Jets dominated the Dolphins earlier this year, but can they do it again? SportsLine takes a close look at the AFC East game.

NEW YORK JETS AT MIAMI DOLPHINS (-3, O/U 38.5), SUN, 1 P.M. ET

If it seems like these teams recently faced off, in fact, they did. The 20-6 score does not reflect the Jets’ dominance of Miami, which avoided a shutout on the final snap with a touchdown.

New York might be riding a straight-up win streak of four games if not for a debatable officials’ call in a narrow loss last Sunday to New England. With the Patriots in their rear-view mirror and the Falcons looming next week, the Jets must resist getting ensnared in a trap game.

Miami might be in the dumps if not for a laudable comeback from a 17-0 halftime deficit in Atlanta that turned into an outright victory.

    LINE MOVEMENTS, TRENDS

The public has gotten wind of how dreadful the Dolphins’ defense is and reduced the spread from its original 3.5.

It also has taken notice that New York has covered four consecutive weeks as well as in 15 of the last 21 meetings in South Florida.

    BREAKDOWN

The two often beleaguered veteran QBs are faring quite differently. New York’s Josh McCown is connecting on over 70 percent of his throws as a supportive ground game brings balance to the offense.

Jay Cutler is hearing chants from the Miami crowd for his backup, though a sputtering running attack has not helped.

The Dolphins’ average of 12.2 points per game is rock-bottom. It might stay that way if WR Davante Parker (ankle) and C Mike Pouncey (concussion protocol) are spectating Sunday.

A third-ranked defense for points yielded (16.8) for the home team almost assures a low-scoring affair, much like the first leg of the series. DE Cameron Wake feasts on the Jets, with eight sacks, four caused fumbles and an interception in 16 career meetings.

LB Lawrence Timmons, who missed the game in New York while suspended for an unexcused absence, is back in the swing of things, so the Jets must lean on RBs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell to take the heat off McCown.
