The Chiefs have dominated this rivalry of late, going 10-3 ATS in Oakland, while the road team is 20-6 ATS in this AFC West matchup. Kansas City also has covered in eight straight after scoring fewer than 15 points in its previous game. Coming off a bye after a blowout loss to the Steelers, look for Kansas City to carve up Oakland’s league-worst defense in a letdown spot for the Raiders after their comeback win last week against the Chargers.
Andy Reid is 15-2 coming off a bye and sharp bettors have pushed the Chiefs to the favorite here. And while the road team has gone 20-6 ATS in the last 26 meetings, the underdog has gone 13-5 ATS in the last 18 meetings. But the Raiders haven't had an offense or an offensive line like this in decades. Derek Carr has been sacked only five times and the Chiefs have virtually no pass rush. Oakland's defense allows a ton of yards, but seems to have the ability to come up big whenever needed. I have these teams rated equally on a neutral field.
This spread is not a typo. Oakland opened as a one-point favorite, but the number has flipped as a key stat has, uh, spread like wildfire: K.C. coach Andy Reid’s 15-2 straight-up record following a bye. Geez, if Reid’s teams could play every other week, he’d have a wing in the Hall of Fame. A secondary factor is the improved health and fitness of Jamaal Charles. The versatile RB, back from a year’s hiatus, had two runs and no receptions in his return two weeks ago. Expect more here against the league’s softest defense.
The Chiefs couldn't have looked worse in their primetime loss at Pittsburgh two weeks ago, but they're the right side against an Oakland team that, despite its 4-1 record, ranks dead last in total defense. Andy Reid is 15-2 straight-up off a bye and the Chiefs will be the better prepared and focused team. The Raiders lead the league with 49 penalties and those mistakes will cost them at some point. Plus, Jamaal Charles will finally be a factor for the offense-starved Chiefs.
Derek Carr is looking like an MVP candidate, leading the Raiders to a 4-1 record while playing four shootouts and winning three of them. However, they face a quality Chiefs team that's coming off the bye after stewing for two weeks about getting blown off the field in Pittsburgh. With the Chiefs getting healthier and proving to be a good defensive team against non-Steelers opponents, I think this game comes down to each team's rushing attack and defense. The Raiders have been great on the ground, but with their defense struggling, the Chiefs score some points here and do enough on defense to win.
