I made Iowa -16.5, with home field being a big factor. Wyoming is getting respect in this spot in part because of promising QB Josh Allen following a breakout season. Iowa has a new QB in Nathan Stanley, but four monster offensive lineman return. Wyoming's defense, which allowed 34 ppg last season, shouldn't give much resistance. Last season, Wyoming went into Nebraska early and was beaten 52-17. Just for perspective, Iowa beat Nebraska 40-10 in the final regular-season game. Iowa should dominate and cover.
Wyoming is a popular underdog in this one, as this spread opened at about two full touchdowns. This is mostly because of the hype surrounding quarterback Josh Allen, who is now getting reviewed as a potential NFL first-round draft pick after a standout sophomore season in which he led the Cowboys to the Mountain West title game. But he has few experienced weapons, as record-setting running back Brian Hill and big-play wideout Tanner Gentry are now in the pros. Iowa has an experienced, solid nucleus and the Hawkeyes should take care of business here.
There will be a lot of eyes on this game because of Wyoming’s talented quarterback, Josh Allen. But those eyes will soon be directed to the backfield of the Iowa Hawkeyes as they have strong depth at RB. Defensively, the Hawkeyes are smothering and will make things very tough on Allen, who will be breaking in three new perimeter targets and a new center. Take Iowa to cover.
