The Lobos entered the Mountain West Tournament on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble according to most bracketology experts. They have since gone on an impressive run, notching high quality wins over Colorado State and Boise State. Those two wins likely put UNM in the Big Dance, but a win over San Diego State today will seal the deal. The Aztecs are a lock for the Tournament, so there is less to play for on their end. I'm taking the points here.
San Diego State has won five of the last seven meetings. The Lobos are finally healthy and have won four of its last five games. New Mexico’s defense has been holding opponents to 61 points over their last three games while shooting 51.4% from the floor. The Aztecs still have one of the best defenses in the country, but their offense goes stagnant from time-to-time. New Mexico is the more athletic and determined team currently while also being the better free-throw shooting team.
These two split the season series with New Mexico winning in The Pit and San Diego State claiming a victory at Viejas. The totals in those games were 158 and 151, and each time we saw New Mexico be able to impose its pace with an attacking style. I think the Lobos have a good game plan and can win this game, but I'm most confident in the total going over.
Will discuss this game on The Early Edge at 10 ET. Full analysis up after the show.
