Minnesota Vikings 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more

One year after arguably the most improbable 13-4 season in NFL history, the Vikings aim to take a step forward with a new-look defense

Former Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Parcells once famously said, "You are what your record says you are." But if any team tested that proclamation, it was the 2022 Minnesota Vikings. Last season Minnesota finished the season 13-4, matching the franchise's record for most wins in a season. But the Vikings had a negative point differential (-3) on the year. For comparison, the Lions had a +26 point differential yet finished 9-8, four games behind NFC North-winning Minnesota in the division. What kind of sorcery is this?

The Vikings deserve credit for their mastery in one-score games. They went an incredible 11-0 record in such games, which was an all-time NFL record. But their magic ran out in the playoffs when Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley and the Giants beat Minnesota, 31-24, in a Wild Card game at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The loss highlighted the Vikings' seasonlong woes on defense. They gave up 443 total yards, including 78 rushing yards and 301 passing yards to Jones. For the season, Minnesota allowed 388.7 total yards per game, which was the second most in the league, better than only Detroit.

That prompted major changes on defense. Coordinator Ed Donatell was fired and replaced by former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. In 2020 Flores led Miami to a 10-6 record, with the defense finishing sixth in the NFL, allowing 21.1 points per game. He inherits a unit that will be working with a new pair of cornerbacks in Byron Murphy Jr. and second round pick Mekhi Blackmon.

On the other side of the ball, the Vikings should again have a highly productive offense despite the loss of running back Dalvin Cook and receiver Adam Thielen for salary cap reasons. Receiver Justin Jefferson (128 receptions for 1,809 yards last season) is a threat to approach 2,000 receiving yards and remains one of the best wideouts in the NFL. Quarterback Kirk Cousins, though much maligned, will get a chance at a second year under the same play-caller (head coach Kevin O'Connell) for the first time in his six seasons in Minnesota. Former Fred Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison brings his considerable talent to the wide receiver room after being selected in the first round of the draft.
