2020 San Diego Padres Preview: Projected rotation, starting lineup, prospects, win total

SportsLine's John Bollman went 14-1 on his MLB win total bets last season. Here he previews the Padres and tells you whether to go Over or Under 83 wins.

John Bollman

San Diego Padres

2019 record: 70-92

Record in one-run games: 26-24

O/U win total from Willam Hill: 83

Key Additions: Tommy Pham, Zach Davies, Emilio Pagan, Trent Grisham, Drew Pomeranz

Key Losses: Manuel Margot, Hunter Renfroe, Eric Lauer, Luis Urias

The Padres did plenty of retooling in the offseason, making multiple trades for Tommy Pham and Zach Davies, but giving up Hunter Renfroe and Luis Urias in the process. They also made a little splash in the free agent market by signing Drew Pomeranz. It looks like the Padres got more talented, but how many wins will that amount to?

Projected Rotation

1) Chris Paddack

2) Dinelson Lamet

3) Zach Davies

4) Garrett Richards

5) Joey Lucchesi/Cal Quantrill

The Padres shouldn't have an innings count on Chris Paddack this season, and they get a full season of Lamet as well. Zach Davies will be a consistent addition to the rotation and Mackenzie Gore is expected to make his debut at some point. San Diego has some starting pitching depth too, albeit with most of it arriving in prospects without Major League experience.

Fantasy-relevant relievers

Kirby Yates (projected 31 saves, 1.71 ERA)

Major League-ready prospects

Mackenzie Gore (SP), Taylor Trammell (OF)

Projected Lineup

1) Fernando Tatis Jr.

2) Tommy Pham

3) Manny Machado

4) Eric Hosmer

5) Wil Myers

6) Trent Grisham

7) Franciso Mejia

8) Jurickson Profar

San Diego's lineup is very daunting with Tatis healthy and Pham added to it. They should be able to score with any other team, but they are lacking some depth. Other than Taylor Trammell, they don't have a wealth of position player prospects expected to come up this season, and they traded away some of their depth during the winter.

Key bench players

Josh Naylor, Austin Hedges
