San Francisco 49ers starting slot receiver Trent Taylor underwent surgery Friday for a broken foot, general manager John Lynch said, without giving a timetable for Taylor's return. The third-year pro out of Louisiana Tech suffered the injury in practice last week. Expectations were high for Taylor, a 5-8, 180-pounder who was turning heads at training camp after being hampered by a back injury last season.
Taylor played in 14 games last year, catching 26 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown. Jalen Hurd and Richie James will compete to replace him in a 49ers offense expected to blossom with Jimmy Garoppolo fully healthy. Most observers believe Taylor will return early in the season.
In Saturday night's 17-9 preseason win over the Cowboys, Hurd caught three of five targets for 31 yards and two touchdowns, while James reeled in six of a team-high seven targets for 31 yards.
Sportsbooks peg the 49ers at 40-1 to win the Super Bowl. For Week 1, San Francisco is a 1-point underdog at Tampa Bay.
