Most news surrounding the Miami Dolphins includes tempered enthusiasm, as the team is widely projected to be in a lengthy rebuilding phase. In fact, the Dolphins face lengthy 500-1 odds to win the upcoming Super Bowl and, as a result, it could be more interesting to project for the future, rather than to simply evaluate for the 2019 season. With that in mind, Miami made a substantial investment in the future of its special teams this week, with Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald breaking news of a four-year contract extension with return specialist Jakeem Grant.

Beasley reported that the Dolphins were "closing in" on such an agreement and, later, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network passed along word that the deal was done. While financial terms are not yet publicly available, Grant was scheduled to make less than $1 million for the 2019 season and, given the nature of this kind of extension, it is safe to assume that a pay raise is associated with the deal that keeps him under contract through the 2023 campaign.

Grant projects to be behind DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, and Kenny Stills on Miami's depth chart at the wide receiver position but he has made strides in that area of his game. Moreover, Grant is one of the most talented return men in the NFL today, garnering substantial attention for his dynamic play, even with six missed games during the 2018 season.

All indications are that Grant is at full strength after returning to practice this week and, at the very least, he did enough to provide the organization with the confidence to extend him. In some ways, Miami's special teams won't be of great intrigue across the NFL this season but, when the ball is in Grant's hands, things can get pretty exciting for the Dolphins and this is a spot on the roster that appears to be in safe hands for the next several seasons.
