Coronavirus: PGA Tour announces schedule for rest of 2020

There will be PGA Tour action from mid-June through early December – minus Thanksgiving weekend -- per the schedule released by the Tour on Thursday.

On Wednesday, news leaked that the PGA Tour planned to resume action – it shut down following the first round of the Players Championship in mid-March due to the coronavirus – starting June 11 with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. On Thursday, the Tour released the schedule for the rest of the year.

Needless to say, this is all dependent on the virus being under control, and fans will not be allowed for at least the first four tournaments and perhaps much longer. Three invitationals on the schedule, the Charles Schwab Challenge (120 players), RBC Heritage (132 players) and the Memorial Tournament (120 players), will have their field sizes increase to 144.

While several events have been/will be outright canceled this year, the A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier will not be a part of the 2020-21 fall schedule and will not return in the future in West Virginia. It was a "mutual agreement" between the PGA Tour and event organizers. That was the only professional event of any kind annually in West Virginia.

That tournament began in 2010 -- Stuart Appleby fired a final-round 59 to win -- and ran every year but 2016 when it was canceled due to massive flooding in the area. The 2020 Greenbrier was originally slated for Sept. 10-13, but now the Safeway Open will slot there.

If the Tour can restart its schedule in June as planned, it will play 36 events in 2019-20, including the three postseason tournaments. Twenty-two tournaments have been played thus far.

The new 2020-21 wraparound schedule now will consist of six major championships because the U.S. Open and Masters are part of the fall schedule this year and then still played in their normal slots in 2021. The PGA Championship is still part of the 2019-20 slate, and the 2020 British Open was canceled.
