Big 12 football league play to kick off September 26, with Oklahoma-Texas still October 10 in Dallas

The Big 12 announced its conference football schedule for the 2020 season.

The Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday night that it would join the ACC and SEC as the only Power Five leagues to attempt to play football this fall, and the Big 12 announced its conference schedule Wednesday. It's what a usual Big 12 slate would look like with each school playing one another once. The conference title game is set for Dec. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, but it can be moved back to Dec. 19 if the start of regular-season play needs to shift back to Oct. 10.

The annual marquee game on the Big 12 schedule is the Red River Rivalry in Dallas between Oklahoma and Texas – those are the two betting favorites to win the league (updated odds TBA) at William Hill sportsbook. That game will remain Oct. 10 at the Cotton Bowl even though the State Fair of Texas, of which the game is the linchpin, has been canceled for 2020 due to the coronavirus. If the virus forces a two-week delay to the season, UT-OU would then be one of the openers. That would be interesting.

Each team will have a minimum of two bye dates and potentially a third late in the season. All non-conference games must be completed before Sept. 26 and those will be announced by each individual conference member.

Some non-conference games have been finalized – all at home -- but none are against other Power Five schools because the SEC is having league games only and the ACC is allowing one non-conference game but at the home of the ACC school.

Thus, there are lopsided non-conference games such as Missouri State-Oklahoma, Tennessee Tech-TCU and Houston Baptist-Texas Tech (i.e. all games Big 12 schools could easily cancel). Baylor, Iowa State and Texas have yet to announce their non-conference games as of this writing, although there are rumors/reports that Baylor could play Louisiana Tech and Texas will face UTEP. Iowa State's opponent is TBA.

With the Big 12 schedule out, that kills any rumors of Nebraska rejoining the league for one year in the wake of the Big Ten canceling fall football. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said this when asked if Nebraska has had any contact with the Big 12: "They have not."
