Team USA overcomes meltdown, defeats Spain for gold medal

BEIJING -- Arm-in-arm, they climbed onto the middle of the medals platform, the spot that for so long was U.S. private property.

Some players flashed their Olympic medals to the crowd. One pretended to take a bite, just to make sure it was real.

Yep, it was gold -- the color the Americans always used to win but hadn't since 2000.

Culminating a three-year mission to end years of embarrassment, the U.S. team survived a huge challenge from Spain, winning 118-107 in the gold-medal game Sunday.

Order was restored in international basketball.

"Much respect to Spain, but the U.S. is back on top again," LeBron James said at a press conference attended by the entire team.

But not by that much anymore.

After overwhelming everyone for seven games, the Americans led by only four points with under 2 minutes to play. Then they proved they could handle a close game that it seemed would never come in Beijing.

Their prize: the first U.S. gold medal since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Argentina won the bronze with an 87-75 victory against Lithuania.

Dwyane Wade scored 27 points for the Americans, who found a much gamer Spanish team than the one they humiliated by 37 points earlier in the tournament. Kobe Bryant added 20 points.

In a game so devoid of defense that it felt more like an NBA All-Star Game than one with a title at stake, the Americans had too much offense down the stretch. Bryant converted a clutch four-point play with 3:10 remaining, holding his finger to his lips to quiet the rowdy Spanish crowd behind the basket.

Wade added another 3-pointer that made it 111-104 with just over 2 minutes left, and only then could the Americans relax a little.

Wow, what a game; the game was a lot closer than I thought it would be.  Thanks to Kobe and D-Wade, US pulled it off though.

Now the question is who's gonna be on the 2012 USA Basketball Olympics team?  Due to majority of this year's players are still young, I'm thinking it'll probably be almost the same team, minus Jason Kidd, plus a few of the current college players.&nb

C- Bill Russell- 6 ft 10 220 lbs- 15 ppg, 22 rpg, 4.5 apg career averages, blocks and steals were not tallied when he played, would be my starting center cause of character pure winner and was agile enough to guard any international big and best ever outlet passer at ce ...(more)

Congrats to the USA for winning athe gold but I really could've done without seeing all the showboating at the end by Kobe and Wade. (Cowardly doing it when you are winning at the end)

This isn't the NBA and there is NO NEED to give other teams the (be quiet signal with your finger over your lips after you hit a three pointer. No need to keep your arms raised up in the air ...(more)

I for one, am sick of the pros invading Olympic turf. Granted there have been pros playing every sport (especially for Communist nations like the former USSR and China) since the games began to take a political tone (Berlin 1936). Yes, I know, the US used to send college kids and they got beat up after a while, but so what. When college kids do the impossible, like they did to the Russians at Lake ...(more)
