Vikings sign Pinkston to bolster depleted receiving corps

MINNEAPOLIS -- Veteran receiver Todd Pinkston became the latest former Eagle to come to Minnesota when he signed a contract with the Vikings on Saturday.

Pinkston spent his first six seasons with the Eagles, playing the last four under current Vikings coach Brad Childress when he was an Eagles assistant coach. He had his best season in 2002, catching 60 passes for 798 yards and seven touchdowns, but missed all of last season with a torn right Achilles' tendon.

He missed the first three exhibition games of this season and only caught one pass against Pittsburgh on Aug. 25. He became expendable in Philadelphia when the Eagles traded for Donte' Stallworth.

Pinkston should provide some depth to a Vikings receiver corps that was rocked last month by the abrupt release of starter Koren Robinson, who was charged with drunken driving and fleeing police near the team's training camp.

Childress, Philly's offensive coordinator the past four seasons, has looked to his former team for help often in his first months with the Vikings. Right guard Artis Hicks and receiver Billy McMullen were acquired in trades and backup quarterback Mike McMahon was signed as a free agent.

Also on Saturday, the Vikings placed second-year cornerback Dovonte Edwards on injured reserve. Edwards was having a strong training camp and appeared to be the nickel back, but broke his right arm in gruesome fashion in the team's final preseason game at Dallas on Thursday night.
