Woodson has Giant task at hand

Andre' Woodson is under no illusion about how much command he has of the Giants offensive playbook.

"Right now I don't have the best understanding of it," said Woodson, a rookie quarterback from Kentucky. "This system is very detailed, it's difficult to pick up, and they've thrown a lot at me. That's the most frustrating thing; there is so much offense that you want to learn, but if you don't have a great understanding or feel for it, it can show in your play."

Woodson will get his first chance to play against the Browns tonight in the Giants' second preseason game, as he'll be the third quarterback behind Eli Manning and Anthony Wright. Woodson is expected to hit the field in the third quarter and eventually give way to David Carr, as coach Tom Coughlin wants to get some action for all four quarterbacks.

"He is like a lot of young quarterbacks, he has it all upstairs as far as what the plays are, but he is still working on being able to pull it out," quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer said. "I'm very happy with his delivery. He came into camp with a little hitch in his delivery, which has improved."

The Giants broke camp at the University at Albany following yesterday's morning walk-through practice.

With K Lawrence Tynes sidelined with an injured left knee, Josh Huston will handle the place-kicking duties for the Giants. Huston last summer in the preseason was 3-of-4 on field goal attempts, but lost his duel with Tynes.

"This is Lawrence's job," said Huston, who had been caddying back in Columbus, Ohio, when the Giants called. "I'm here to service these guys and give Lawrence an opportunity to rest up and it's a good opportunity for me to get out there, get some game film and hope that someone sees me."

Players not expected to suit up for tonight's preseason game against the Browns include: WRs Plaxico Burress (ankle), Amani Toomer (knee), Steve Smith (hamstring) and Mario Manningham (quad); LBs Mathias Kiwanuka (groin) and Jonathan Goff (back); Tynes (knee) and CBs Sam Madison (sports hernia) and R.W. McQuarters (hip flexor).

Wide receiver David Tyree (knee) remains on the physically unable to perform list.
