Bears release strong safety Archuleta

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears released veteran strong safety Adam Archuleta on Tuesday, ending a brief and disappointing tenure with the team.

Archuleta, 30, broke a hand early last season and started in just 10 of the 15 games in which he appeared. He lost his starting job to Brandon McGowan and finished the season on special teams.

The Bears drafted LSU safety Craig Steltz in the fourth round of last month, but Tuesday's announcement was still a surprise. Coach Lovie Smith said at an NFL combine in February the Bears did not plan to cut Archuleta.

"Adam, just like some more of our players, didn't have the type of season we were hoping, he was hoping," Smith said. "But he's still a part of our ballclub and we're expecting him to come back stronger this year."

The Bears acquired Archuleta from the Washington Redskins in March 2007 for a sixth-round draft pick.

When he joined Washington in 2006, he received the largest contract ever given to a safety: $30 million for six years, with a $10 million bonus. But he flopped, starting seven games while playing mostly on special teams and finishing the season as a third-stringer.

St. Louis drafted Archuleta with the 20th overall pick in 2001.

Any guy who can knock up Jennifer Walcott is a winner.

Nice job!

Now what will he do? I'm sure he only has around $15 million or so saved in his bank accounts. It's just not fair that an NFL team can just drop you if you don't perform up to their standards. Now all he has is his ex-playmate wife to hang out with. Must be so boring.

Stay strong Adam, there are people out here to support you in this time of strife.

The things they said he was bad at, he was really bad at. The things he said he was good at, the underneath stuff he was bad at too.  He got run over by everyone, took bad angles on tackles.  He didn't work out near an acceptable level, it makes you wonder how they didn't see it sooner.  I wasn't looking forward to seeing him on the roster for another year.  I fi ...(more)

I was quite sure the Bears would pull the trigger on AA, but until you see it done, one can never be sure.

With Mike Brown (please stay healthy), McGowan, D. Manning, Kevin Payne (stud that ...(more)

Now if they could just find a sucker to take Grossman off their hands the world would be wine and roses for the Bears.

How they went through this draft without picking up a QB, I will never know.  Even if they hand the job to Grossman, don't most teams like to have three QB's (four going into camp).  May ...(more)
